I finished reading this collection of stories yesterday I started it in 1991 The reason it took 22 years to read was that I simply took it very slowly reading one story and then putting the book back on the shelf for another year or soThe truth is that when I began reading Villiers de l Isle Adam I wasn t sure I really like him His writing seemed deliberately obscure and overloaded with useless erudition I also harboured deep doubts about his tendency to make sentences seem shocking that they are actually are by putting them in italicsBut slowly slowly I came to appreciate his work I was initially expecting something along the lines of Poe ie gothic horror stories with dark endings The very title of the collection Cruel Tales encouraged me in this belief So when the stories turned out to be not uite like that I was disappointedLater I learned that this collection had previously been translated into English with the title Sardonic Tales which makes a lot sense These stories are ironic astoundingly so but until I was fully attuned to this fact in other words until I switched from wanting the emotional impact that horror fiction supposedly can provide to actively seeking the intellectual stimulus of the ironic fable I failed to appreciate the genius that was VilliersAnd he was a genius no doubt about itChoosing a favourite among these stories is difficult but I suspect that The Secret of the Old Music might be the one What impressed me about it so much was the fact it s a lateral logic concept story that anticipates the composition of John Cage s famous 4 33 by 69 yearsIt seems churlish to choose other favourites Almost all the stories have something to offer The ironies embedded in them are exuisite and sometimes extremely painful The Desire to be a Man is stunning as is Celestial Publicity The Unknown Woman Vera The Eleventh Hour Guest The Brigands Even the weaker pieces are refreshingly unusual and original Occult Memories would not have been out of place in an issue of Weird Tales when Lovecraft et al were mainstaysThe final story which Villiers detached as a sort of epilogue The Messenger is one of the most deliberately overwritten stories ever penned It s too rich for the mental palate and yet this baroue excess is part of the charm and dare I say it fun It s the re telling of an old Hebrew myth the same myth that Jean Cocteau retold in a few brief paragraphs as part of his novel The Miscreant Indeed in many ways Villiers is the opposite of Cocteau but both were visionaries Beautiful Torment Beautiful #1 philtre goutte à goutte Tu as mis en cette œuvre une somme de Beauté extraordinaire La lan.
