Very illuminating study on poverty in NYC in 1890 when the book came out With descriptions of great detail of the lives of poor and immigrant communities The problems described were horrendous and while we may have improved a lot since that time there are things in the narrative about the lives of the poor that echo today in the poverty and sualor that still exist in the US never mind the developing world The book forms a whole describing almost every misfortune someone in poverty must contend I put some description of this in the updates It is a powerful work that still grabs the readers attention almost 130 years later
